Using Google as a proxy
Posted by admin in Technology on April 25th, 2009
Did you know that you can use Google translator to access sites blocked by firewall at work or school using the following simple methods:
Its easy, simply paste the following URL in to your browser’s address bar and replace www.site.com with the URL that you received from your friend.
http://www.google.com/translate?langpair=en|en&u=www.site.com
So for example if the URL for a YouTube video is;
www.youtube.com/watch?v=4xOt9m76sNA
simply change the URL above to;
http://www.google.com/translate?langpair=en|en&u=www.youtube.com/
watch?v=4xOt9m76sNA
… and say hello to YouTube!
Just don’t tell the Chinese.
Picli - photo sharing
I’ve found an interesting site photo sharing site called Picli (www.picli.com) The idea is that you upload your photo(s) and people comment and vote on them. Popular photos are presented in the Showcase. Picli is a cross between Digg and Flickr. It’s quite small at the moment with only about 2,500 members but hopefully it grows and folks develop desktop applications for the presentation of Picli hosted photos with the coming API.
Three of my photos are currently in the showcase.

Geocoding data for use in Google maps
Posted by admin in Technology on April 18th, 2009
I’ve been working on Geocoding data for presentation in Google Earth and Google Maps. I’ve found a useful site (www.batchgeocode.com) which calculates the GPS coordinates based on an imported CSV file containing postal addresses. This is great for the ad-hoc conversion of CSV data but I’m looking for some software that can be called from the command line and accepts a CSV file as an argument and outputs a KML file.
If anyone knows of such a program please let me know.
